Navajo Language Resources Community Forum

by Rhiannon Sorrell on 2022-03-01T16:02:00-07:00 | 0 Comments

They say Navajo Language resources out there.... So why are they so hard to find?

Join us in discussing the state of our Diné Bizaad language learning resources! In this community forum, we invite both Diné Bizaad teachers and learners to discuss their experiences creating, finding, utilizing, and incorporating Diné Bizaad resources in their learning and teaching, as well as discuss current needs. We also invite you to discuss your experiences learning or teaching Diné Bizaad during the pandemic or in an online environment.

What do we mean by "resources"? We’re talking about everything that supports and perpetuates the use of Diné Bizaad in all environments and platforms, including (but not limited to!) books, songs, stories, teachings, texting tools, fonts, maps, dictionaries, videos, recordings, newspapers, periodicals, lectures, public programming, language apps, podcasts, social media, and more.

We welcome you to hear our invited speakers, who both work in the areas of advocacy and resource development! Their presentations will help guide our discussions around Navajo Language Resources and development tools. Delegate Nathaniel Brown will give his talk "Building Diné Bizaad capacity: Diné Bizaad Sub-committee mission and vision on behalf of the 24th Navajo Nation Council" in our first session on Tuesday, March 15th at 9:00 am. Community Diné Educator Valencia Edgewater will give her talk "Creating online resources for language teachers and learners using the Google platform and other free technology tools" on Thursday, March 17th at 9:00am.

The origin of this forum comes from concerns around the find-ability and accessibility of Diné Bizaad resources for teaching and learning, especially in online and virtual environments. As a library that provides access to knowledge, we are interested in exploring how we can make these resources more findable to help support language learning and teaching needs - whether in the form of a searchable database or virtual community library. Whether you’re an instructor or learner, no matter your fluency level - we want to hear from you! Join our discussion!

Session 1: Tuesday, March 15th 9:00am-11:00am

Session 2: Thursday, March 17th 9:00am-11:00am
